Maths in our school

Primary Maths Curriculum

The Department of Education has published a new Maths curriculum for children in primary and special schools. The aim of the new Maths curriculum is that children see Maths as playful, important and useful to their everyday lives. You can read more about the new Maths curriculum below.

We are lucky in our school that the teaching of Maths has always been entirely child centered, fun, hands on, engaging and very relevant to the children’s every day lives. We use Team Teaching for numeracy and this has proven to help facilitate active and engaging learning experiences for every child in the class including children with Special Education Needs(SEN).

Below are some photographs of the children taking part in some Maths lessons in our school. You can see from the photos that Maths is taught using concrete materials. Teachers also like to use the environment around them and the outdoors to assist with the teaching of Maths.  Ms Reddin’s class went on a colour hunt in the school grounds to look for their “colour of the week: brown” in the natural world.
