New Junior Infants

Information for Junior Infants

Please find the parents information booklet for 2026/2027 here.

Here is a video of what your Junior Infant Classroom might look like!

Thanks to Ms O’Toole for starring in, producing and editing this fantastic video and Ms Ní Bhroin for the great camera-work!

Here is a list of some useful general information for parents:

School begins at 8.50am and concludes at 1.30pm

Uniform:

Girls:

Navy pinafore, white shirt and a navy cardigan.

Boys:

Navy trousers, white shirt and a navy jumper.

On PE days the children must wear navy tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt and a navy jumper. Please try to give your child extra water on their PE days.

The school crest is available from the school office and can be sewn on to your child’s cardigan/jumper. They cost €5 each.

School Supplies:

We provide the children with all of the books/workbooks/stationary and supplies they need while they are in our school. We ask for a contribution of €80 at the beginning of the year to cover the cost of art and craft supplies, Aladdin, hands on activities and photocopying.

Lunches:

Lunch is supplied for the children every day. This consists of sandwiches, fruit and milk. You are welcome to provide lunch for your child but please adhere to our healthy eating policy and ensure that there are no nut based foods in your child’s lunch.

How you can prepare your child for starting in Junior Infants:

  • Ensure that your child can use the toilet by themselves and knows how to wash and dry their hands after using the toilet.
  • Practise putting on and taking off their coat.  Your child will need to be able to do this independently.  Zips and buttons will need lots of practice, including sleeve buttons!
  • Choose a lunchbox and bottle that your child can open and close themselves.
  • Practise opening and closing lunch box and bottle.
  • Practise opening and closing your child’s schoolbag and taking out items. Your child will need to be able to do this independently.
  • Write your child’s name on all of their clothes especially school jumpers.  It will help your child greatly to be able to recognise their own first name.
  • Most importantly, talk to your child about who and what to expect in school.  This is especially important to children who have not completed a pre-school year.  Explain some of the basic school rules in advance of starting e.g. sitting down, listening to their teacher, trying their best, putting up their hand to get teacher’s attention.
  • Talk to them about any worries they might have.  Remind them of all the fun things they will do and learn in school:  songs, stories, games, making new friends, art etc.
  • Develop fine motor skills by using playdoh, pegs, threading, beading and experience with colouring.

Your child’s schoolbag should contain:

  • A healthy lunch and water if you wish to send one in. Our school has a healthy lunch policy.  Please avoid sugary fruit drinks.  Often these drinks are marketed as healthy but in reality are full of sugar. We have a “nut free” policy in our school which we would ask you to adhere to.
  • Please send in a lunch box. Your child will be given a sandwich, piece of fruit and a carton of milk. Any leftovers will be brought home so you can see what they have eaten.
  • Please ensure this is a lunchbox the child can open and close independently.
  • An old oversized shirt / T-shirt for art lessons / messy play.  This will help protect their new uniforms.

Looking forward to meeting you all in September!
